Annesdale:  The Untold Story of An African American

Community-Part 2 by Teresa Hill Mays


Real estate investor Elzey Eugene Meacham and his wife, Lula Gilchrist Meacham purchased the North Annesdale Subdivision on April 4, 1898. They developed the area where mostly African Americans lived. This is research and documentation of that working class community. It is a continuation of an earlier presentation and shares more aspects of the once viable and productive area, Annesdale is situated between the present-day Cooper Young and Annesdale Park subdivisons in Memphis, TN. 

Teresa Hill Mays, a native Memphian, with 40 years of experience in research and documentation of the history of families and places.  She is a member of the Tennessee Genealogical Society, serving as Multicultural Advisor and on the Program Committee.  She is President of the Afro American Historical and Genealogical Society - Memphis and Mid-South Chapter and serves on their National Chapters Committee. Teresa was appointed to the Shelby County Historical Commission as County Genealogist (2022) and elected Vice Chairperson this year. Her interest in researching family began as a young child and today she displays an enthusiastic knowledge and expertise in this field.   

Access will be through GoToWebinar.  Instructions and Connectivity Link will be forwarded via email to all registrants upon registration, six days prior and again 1 hour prior to the event.  Making the connection is quick and easy only requiring a computer and Internet connectivity from wherever you chose to watch the event. Your questions help drive the meetings, and we will be there to help each other.
